B1/B2 Visas
Perhaps your tourism visit will last more than 90 days. Or perhaps you wish to enroll in the sports Academy program but will not be attending school. Or perhaps your country does not participate in the Visa Waiver Program. The B1/B2 visa, otherwise known as a visitor/tourist visa, is specifically for persons wishing to enter the United States for business, pleasure, tourism, or medical needs.
This visa is appropriate for non-student athletes, for parents, and for general tourists who wish to visit the Academy without enrolling in a full-time program. You may also utilize this visa if you are in an Academy program with no academic component.
Parents of student-athletes are not eligible to “use” their child’s F-1 visa to enter the USA. They must apply for a tourist visa or enter under the Visa Waiver Program.
From the Department of State: Pleasure, Tourism, Medical Treatment - Visitor Visas (B-2) - As examples, if the purpose of your planned travel is recreational in nature, including tourism, vacation (holiday), amusement, visits with friends or relatives, rest, medical treatment, activities of a fraternal, social, or service nature, and participation by amateurs, who will receive no remuneration, in musical, sports and similar events or contests, then a visitor visa (B-2) would be the appropriate type of visa for your travel. If you are going to the U.S. primarily for tourism, but want to take a short course of study which is recreational (and not for credit towards a degree), and the course is less than 18 hours per week, this is permitted on a visitor visa. As an example, if you are taking a vacation to the U.S., and during this vacation you would like to take a two-day cooking class for your enjoyment, and there is no credit earned, then this would be permitted on a visitor visa. A consular officer will determine the visa category you will need based on the purpose of your travel, and your supporting documentation.
Applying for a Tourist Visa: Each applicant for a tourist visa must submit to their Embassy: 1) the DS-160, online application for nonimmigrant visa; 2) a passport valid for at least 6 months after the applicant’s intended period of stay; and 3) one 2x2 photograph. There is also a required visa application and issuance fee.
Applicants must demonstrate that they are properly classifiable as visitors under U.S. law by:
- Evidence which shows the purpose of the trip, intent to depart the United States, and arrangements made to cover the costs of the trip may be provided. It is impossible to specify the exact form the documentation should take since applicants' circumstances vary greatly.
- Those applicants who do not have sufficient funds to support themselves while in the U.S. must present convincing evidence that an interested person will provide support.
- Depending on individual circumstances, applicants may provide other documentation substantiating the trip's purpose and specifying the nature of binding obligations, such as family ties or employment, which would compel their return abroad.

The IMG College Planning and Placement Center works with all students including post-graduates to create an individualized roadmap to reach their goal of studying and playing their sport at the collegiate level. This work begins upon a student’s entry into high school (grade 9) and incorporates families, coaches, and university admissions and athletic staff in their efforts.
