Dwight Powell

IMG Basketball coach Vince Walden, Dwight Powell and momWhen Dwight Powell first immersed himself in the hectic life of a freshman student-athlete at Stanford University, he realized something very quickly.

Life in Palo Alto wasn’t so much different from his home away from home for his final three years of high school — IMG Academies in Bradenton, Fla.

“IMG definitely gets you prepared mentally as far as how to budget your time and emotionally in how to deal with being away from home,” says Powell, an elite student and basketball player who was recruited by some of the top schools in the nation before settling on Stanford. “IMG gives you the freedom to find yourself in a way that most high school students couldn’t really do at a ‘normal’ high school.”

Transferring to IMG Academies from Canada at age 16, Powell said his on-court skill and physical ability improved “light years” by the time he graduated in the class of 2010. Perhaps more important, he found an increased level of confidence academically and socially.

As a senior, Powell averaged 23 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks per game. In the classroom, he earned a 4.17 grade-point average. He also took great strides socially.

“At age 14, 15, 16 or 17, most kids don’t get to share a living space with someone from China or Ukraine or even just across the country,” Powell says. “To share your culture and learn about others, you grow together and realize there’s so much out in the world to appreciate.”

The IMG Basketball Academy emphasizes a unique formula for success to maximize results. The same coaching specialists that work on the floor with NBA All-Stars also work with all IMG Basketball Academy players, creating a training environment that is second-to-none. Already utilized by NBA pros, college stars and continually improving youth and teenage players, the IMG Basketball Academy's system will undoubtedly help your game.

The National Team Program and Developmental Team Program (for high school and middle school students) operates on a semester or year-long schedule (September-May) for boys and girls to focus on basketball and overall athletic development of the player. We utilize a multi-phased approach that incorporates player evaluation, skill instruction, and high-quality competition with opportunities for college exposure recruitment and placement. Each athlete is placed on a team for competitive purposes, but the focus remains on the individual player's development under our comprehensive training curriculum.

IMG Pendleton School

With experienced teachers, challenging classes, creative coursework, low student-to-teacher ratios and an encouraging learning environment all in the heart of the IMG Academies' campus, IMG Pendleton offers the ultimate in preparation for college.

By offering small class sizes, individualized attention, extra evening sessions with teachers, an American style curriculum, and "Orbund" online program to increase communication between students, parents, teachers and staff, IMG Pendleton fully integrates with the athletic schedule to strike a perfect balance of school and sports.

Mark Blaweiss serves as IMG Academies’ NCAA Compliance Officer and will make sure eligibility standards are met by both American and International students.

Girls' Basketball Program

Coach Shell wants you! Here’s what she has to say….

  1. Our girls program is for players who want to get better, not just professionals.
  2. The IMG Academies Girls Basketball program has a number of alumni that have received scholarships and gone on to play Division I, II, and III basketball.
  3. We understand the differences between men’s and women’s basketball. We tailor our training programs to be most effective for girls’ development by focusing on areas such as nutrition, weight training, communication, and team building.
  4. We have played and coached at all levels and can help you succeed in high school, college, and in the pros.
  5. We focus on each individual player, creating a customized program to maximize her total development. Through detailed analysis of individual skills, goals and needs, every drill on the court, each prescribed exercise, as well as all mental preparation, nutritional plans and off-court lifestyle programs, are designed to produce maximum, sustained results on and off the basketball court, and give each player the best chance to reach her potential.
  6. Individualized instruction is incorporated through targeted goal-setting and film study, including collaborative breakdowns of performance with coach Shell Dailey, as well as team analysis.

Shell Dailey, Coordinator of the Women’s Program, is a former WNBA (San Antonio Silver Stars) and Division 1 (Florida, Texas A&M, South Carolina and Texas Christian) coach.  All girls who come to the IMG Basketball Academy will have the opportunity to work directly with and be evaluated by Coach Shell.

Dailey played at the University of Texas under Hall of Fame coach Jody Conradt. Dailey won four Southwest Conference titles, reached the NCAA Tournament every year and played in the national championship game as a freshman.

PERFORMANCE ELECTIVES

THE TOTAL ATHLETE is someone who maximizes his or her full potential across all dimensions of performance. Someone who refuses to sacrifice academics for athletics — or vice versa.

Becoming THE TOTAL ATHLETE, however, takes time and commitment. The earlier a student-athlete enrolls at IMG Academies during his or her prep years, the more time they will have to learn, grow, develop and experience all that IMG Academies has to offer, helping them become confident that they can take on the world during their journey through life.
