Stetson University baseball coach Pete Dunn announced today the signing of Alfredo Escalera, an infielder/outfielder from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Escalera is the 12th member of the Hatters’ 2012 signing class and will join the program in the fall.
“Alfredo is an extremely athletic student-athlete and has the ability to play any outfield or infield position,” Dunn said. “He has game-changing speed and a very good bat that projects to have some power at the Division I level.”
Escalera currently plays at the IMG Baseball Academy in Bradenton, Fla., where he was the spring batting champion and was rated as the No. 1 prospect by Rawlings for 2011. He has already been named to the 2012 Under Armour Preseason All-America team.
Primarily a third baseman at the IMG Baseball Academy, Escalera hit .506 last spring with two homers while stealing 12 bases in just 77 at bats.
“Alfredo’s makeup is off the charts,” IMG coach Jason Elias said. “He is a stand out guy who’s presence picks everyone up. Alfredo is a member of the National Honor Society and works very hard in the classroom from an academic perspective. It’s been an absolute pleasure to work with and get to know Alfredo over the last four years as his coach.”
The Hatters expect Escalera to be a triple threat once he "matures physically" (he turns 17 in February), providing speed, power and outstanding defensive play.
“Alfredo has consistently run sub 6.6 60 yard dashes and will get faster as he gets stronger,” Dunn said. “We are very excited to have Alfredo becoming a Hatter as he rounds out this already impressive class.
